Frequently asked questions

Do you have Protools?

Yes, we have Protools. No, we don't always use Protools. In recent years, we’ve found that the word "Protools" gets used as the generic term for computer based audio, similar to "Kleenex" being used rather than tissue or "Coke" instead of soda.

Yes, we have Protools, but we also use a number of other high quality audio software systems. More importantly is that we use the highest quality equipment including the newest Macintosh computers, Apogee digital converters and the highest quality microphones and preamps. To that end, we also still use our coveted Studer & MCI tape machines quite regularly.

Something to ALWAYS remember is that more important than any equipment a studio may offer, it's the person using that equipment that is most important to the outcome of a project. A bad engineer is still a bad engineer, regardless what world-class equipment he or she may have at their disposal. The engineering staff at Sound Factory is a talented and knowledgeable group of individuals that work hard to provide the highest quality recording services available.

What can we do before coming to the studio?

Make sure your instruments working perfectly. We highly recommend having your guitars set up and intonated. We also recommend putting new heads on your drums. It costs a little money, but the end result is well worth it.

There are a gazillion other things an artist can do to enhance their time at the studio before ever arriving to the studio. However, these are often project specific. Once you’ve booked time and the scope of the project has been discussed, we will discuss in detail the things an artist can do prior to arriving to make the best of their studio time and ultimately the final recording.

Do you have instruments and/or amps we can use?

Of course we do. After all, Sound Factory is a music studio. We have an array of vintage and modern instruments and amplifiers available for use by our clients.

Can we come see the Studio before we book time?

We are quite proud of our studio and would love to show it you. To arrange a tour, simply contact us.

Can you remix a song at Sound Factory that was tracked at home or in another studio?

Absolutely! More and more, we work with artists who've done extensive tracking on their own but cannot seem to get that mix that shines. We suggest those artists consider bringing their tracks to Sound Factory for mixing. When working in rooms that weren't designed for audio mixing, it's difficult to get a mix that translates well. On top of having a control room designed specifically for mixing and the equipment to make it happen, our years of experience and well-trained ears will bring out the best in your musical project. In our services section, you'll find other services available relating to this topic.

Can you PRODUCE our album?

A PRODUCER's role is different for each project depending upon the needs and chemistry of each project. A producers role extends beyond simply engineering and often includes multiple levels of involvement, as needed, for such things as: Pre-production, song writing, song arrangement considerations, engineering, material choices or priorities, budget priorities and even holding hands or settling artistic disputes.

It is not the intent of Sound Factory engineers to assume such roles that fall under the domain of a producer unless specifically agreed upon. Nonetheless, staff members do become a member of the artistic team to the extent appropriate or as requested.

When relationships exist or develop over time, standard industry practice when agreed upon entails compensation for extra investment of time and talent by means of additional payment and/or sharing in potential profits. Industry models exist for estimating compensation yet each situation will have a different degree of producer investment or contribution of talent.
